Streng sezierend, radikal reduziert – Robert Mapplethorpes Stillleben und Porträts sind ruhige, formal vollendete Kompositionen in klinischer Reinheit. Nackte, makellose Körper werden zu Landschaften und explizit sexuelle Handlungen zu kühlen, fast unerotischen Körperstudien, bei denen die technische Perfektion im Vordergrund steht.
Mapplethorpe stellte das Spiel mit sexueller Identität und Inszenierung in den Fokus seines Werkes. Seine Fotografien verweisen aber auch auf Themen wie Gender, Körperlichkeit, Religion, Krankheit und Selbstwahrnehmung.
In Vorträgen und Diskussionen sowie über eine von dem Anthropologen Todd Sekuler und dem Künstler Aykan Safo�0¸7glu für C/O Berlin kuratierte Film- und Videoserie soll Robert Mapplethorpes künstlerisches Erbe kritisch hinterfragt werden.
Wie beeinflussen die Medien unser Verständnis seiner Fotografien? Wo und wann kommt es zu Provokation und Skandal in der Kunst? Wie wirken sich Faktoren wie Zeit, Ort und Perspektive auf den Prozess der Entstehung und die Rezeption von Bildern aus?
